Send us the book only you could write.
For authors, author-illustrators and their agents.
Reading now · open through January 19, 2027Are you working on the next Where the Wild Things Are — or the book that will make someone forget it for an evening? The next Charlotte’s Web, the next Holes, the next novel a fourteen-year-old reads under the covers and never quite gets over?
We aren’t asking for imitations. Those books lasted because they sounded like no one else, and that is what we hope to find in the pile: a picture book a child asks for fifty nights running, a chapter book that turns a reluctant reader into a greedy one, a young adult novel that tells the truth about being young without flinching or lecturing.
Bradbury Press is a small, independent children’s book publisher in New York. We take on a handful of books a season, which means each one gets an editor’s full attention, from the first line edit to the finished jacket. Our editors read agented and unagented submissions alike, and a first-time writer with the right manuscript is as welcome as anyone.
Illustrators and visual storytellers have their own door — the art desk.
Submission guidelines
Picture books
Send the complete text, ideally under 800 words. Keep art notes to the few a reader truly needs.
- Writers: text only. We find the illustrator.
- Author-illustrators: a dummy plus two or three finished spreads.
Early readers & chapter books
A query, a short synopsis of the series or book, and the full text of the first book.
Middle grade
A query letter, a one-page synopsis with the ending, and the first three chapters. You can also send the whole manuscript.
Young adult
As for middle grade. Tell us about comparable titles if you like, but keep it to two and leave out the blockbusters.
Graphic novels & nonfiction
A proposal, an outline or script, and sample pages. For graphic novels, include finished art for at least five pages.
What happens next
- Simultaneous submissions are fine. Just tell us if another house makes an offer.
- Please send one project at a time.
- We reply within eight to twelve weeks when we would like to read more.
Submit your manuscript
Common questions
How do I submit a children’s book manuscript to Bradbury Press?
Use the submission form on this page. Send a query letter and synopsis, and attach the manuscript or opening chapters if you have them. Picture book texts can be attached in full.
Does Bradbury Press accept unagented submissions?
Yes. Agented and unagented submissions are both read by our editors. The current reading window is open through January 19, 2027.
Do I need an illustrator before submitting a picture book?
No. If you write but don’t illustrate, send the text on its own. We pair authors with illustrators ourselves.
How long until I hear back?
Usually eight to twelve weeks. If we would like to read more, an editor will write to you directly.
